Jan 04, 2006: 100 Big Ones

Well, I made my first big purchase as a publisher today. No, I didn't sign a mega-deal with Edward Tufte, or acquire the movie rights for Information Anxiety. Actually, I went out and bought me 100 ISBNs. It was something of an impulse purchase, and I'm not entirely sure what to do with them now. So there they sit in the back of the Passat; I hope they don't get stale...

How much did the 100 ISBN's cost you?

About US$850. You can get pricing and details from isbn.org, Bowker's site (they're the US agent for ISBNs). I could have purchased 10 for about US$250, but I'm optimistic that I'll use 10 up within a year. (You have to use an ISBN for PDF versions as well as print.)

I wish there was a middle range, like 25 or 50. I feel like a domain squatter, only a stupid one, as you can't resell ISBNs...
