Nov 29, 2007: SOS

Totally hosed here. I performed a dreaded "advanced rebuild" of Entourage this morning. Lost tons of critical email. Realized--too late--that trashing and deleting the old database was a bad idea before checking out the new one. (It was 4am.) Now trying to recover and am desperate for help.

Recovered the old database using Data Rescue II, but Entourage won't open it. Took it to an authorized Mac repair place here in Brooklyn; they were extremely helpful, but could get it to open. I can recover most of the old mail from my last backup, but I'm done with Entourage for good. I'm going to bite the bullet and move all the old mail (in mbox format) to gmail--ASAP--but can't get gml Loader to run properly (ack--terminal mode--ACK!--Unix command line language--13-year old memories covered in dust--ACK!!!). If I can get it to run, I can start migrating my 2.5 gigs of old mail to gmail right away. I need that old mail, and not just because I'm a pack rat.

Can anyone help me get gml Loader running? Or have a better solution (suicide isn't an option)?

OK, I found this, and it looks like it should work: http://www.gmailuploader.com/

...but it's not. Google says that the mbox files produced by Entourage aren't the proper format.

Yeah, Entourage is a Microsoft product so it doesn't create a standard Unix mbox formatted file.

The best thing I could find: http://www.david-reitter.com/software/osxhints.html

Can you load the old mail in something like Mail.app or Thunderbird? If so, and you want to end up in Gmail, one thing you could do is enable IMAP in Gmail, and then create an IMAP account in Mail.APP/Thunderbird, then copy the mail from the mbox file into the IMAP account.

Thanks Walker; doesn't look like that will do the trick.

Ed, I've heard that Thunderbird might work. Will check on it.

Are you moving to Gmail or to Google Apps for Your Domain? The latter features a great IMAP migration tool that does all the heavy lifting for you. (It requires that you have your email on an IMAP server first.)

If moving to Gmail, I second Ed's suggestion of going the IMAP route. This can even be done from within Entourage, although I bet it'll be slow.

Have you tried importing to Mail on your Mac? Mail has the ability of importing from Entourage. I have never needed to do this, but it might be a useful step from which you can then move everything to gmail if you so desire. Otherwise, if it works well, you can always stay with Mail.

Thanks Tim; actually, Jorge's advice is working great (so far!). Thanks everyone! I think I'll survive...

I think you're on to this already, but I now avoid Apple Mail like the plague.

Earlier this year I found Apple Mail been silently hosing saved mail for weeks. Couldn't get some of it back from backups. Went over to the last Qualcomm-released version of Eudora and am awaiting the update to the open-source version - or something better (Thunderbird didn't cut it).

Would certainly recommend that you go with something that uses a text-based mailbox file, so you have a text editor or perl or Applescript or something for the "recovery of last resort".

Are the enterprise IA seminars also open for exchange students? Or are these private seminars?

Comment: Lou (Dec 4, 2007)

They were open seminars, but I'm now officially retired. :-) See this for more info:

Thanks Lou! :) enjoy your retirement...
